1. Retinol Can Be Harsh on Skin
While retinol can be effective in the war on wrinkles, the side effects can be extreme. Peeling, burning, visible irritation, dryness, and even cracked skin are among the adverse effects of using retinol. It also clocks in at a 9 out of 10 on the EWG Hazard Score because of an FDA study indicating that retinoid ingredients may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions on sun-exposed skin.
2. Retinol Increases Sun Sensitivity
While using retinol, skin becomes extra sensitive to the effects of ultraviolet rays, so it's recommended that you avoid sunlight during use. In other words, when you use a retinol skincare product, your skin becomes even more vulnerable to one of the primary causes of premature visible aging. The FDA notes that skin exposed to wind and cold while using retinol may also suffer increased irritation.
3. Retinol Can Be Hard to Layer
Because of retinol's potentially sensitizing effects on skin, it can be hard to use other basic skincare alongside a retinol. Cleansers, soaps, and astringents can have a drying effect, which can then exacerbate the harsh irritation of retinol. The FDA suggests giving skin periods of "rest" to deal with the adverse affects of retinol.
4. Retinol is Not Safe During Pregnancy
Researchers have raised the alarms on using topical retinol during pregnancy. Applying retinol while pregnant may contribute to excessive vitamin A intake for pregnant women and other populations. While more studies need to be performed to fully understand these effects, we'll take the side of caution and avoid the use of risky retinol.
5. Bakuchiol is an Effective Natural Alternative to Retinol
Luckily, there is a vegan, plant-derived alternative to retinol. Bakuchiol is praised for its ability to effectively reduce the look of wrinkles, visibly even tone, and give skin a plump and dewy look. This magically potent ingredient is found in our Illuminate BC+ Brightening Serum, alongside other powerhouse ingredients like Vitamin C, Baobab Seed, and Black Mulberry.
